Pen Review: Platinum 3776 Century Nice: Rose Gold

It’s perpetually rose-gold season in my world! I wanted to write about a pen that I had labeled as a “catch and release”. It left my collection without much fuss (for reasons listed below). However, I decided to take a chance after experiencing The Nibsmith’s magic—and the pen is now a permanent member of the family!

Platinum is a Japanese pen manufacturer that was founded in 1919. Their lineup spans affordable (Pilot Preppy) to luxurious (Nakaya). When I talk about Japanese pens, I think of the “Big Three”: Sailor, Platinum, and Pilot/Namiki.

Fun fact: the #3776 represents the height of Mt. Fuji.

Design (4.5/5):

This demonstrator model is inspired by the Nice, a Southern France resort. The body is made of resin and is light, weighing around 20 g(0.7 oz). Unlike other demonstrators on the market, this pen sports facets which are formed via sand-blasting. Additionally, the cap is Platinum’s marketed “Slip and Seal” mechanism, which prevents ink from drying out. The pen is comfortable posted or unposted and is light for long writing sessions. I also like the idea of the slip & seal cap!

Color (5/5): This model comes in a variety of colors (blue, lilac, pink) but I opted for the clear resin with a rose-gold trim. I’m a fan of rose-gold as I think it’s classy and elegant. Surprisingly, I’ve found that I quite like seeing the remaining ink levels in this pen.

Nib (4-5/5): This model houses a 14k rose gold nib. I chose a broad nib and asked Dan to smooth it out. The pen lays down a line that is similar to a Western medium. I’ve mentioned before that I don’t like nibs with feedback, and Platinum nibs fall solidly within that category. They are not scratchy, but you do “feel” the contact between nib and paper.

Ink Capacity (3/5): The 3776 can be used with cartridges (1.27 mL) or converters (0.82 mL). There is nothing extraordinary about the capacity.

Overall (4/5): The faceted design and rose-gold detail make this a sophisticated writer. I’m especially happy with the smooth writing experience!
