Ink Review #234: Pelikan 4001 Blue Black

Today I’ll be reviewing a blue-black ink. My interest in this color range has perked up quite a bit this year! I find that blue-black inks are demure enough to be professional, yet provide a refreshing change from regular blue and black inks.

Pelikan 4001 Blue Black is a well-recognized ink across the internet. It is known for its iron-gall-like qualities. Interestingly, the United States does not carry this ink due to how it is formulated—I purchased my sample overseas from fountainfeder.

Swabs:

This is a dark blue-black with high shading and no sheen.

Update: In 2023, the ink has faded quite a bit. I have posted pictures below.

Dry Time/Water Resistance:

This ink had a long dry time at 50 seconds and medium water resistance.

Writing Sample:

I enjoyed this ink a lot! The color is right up my alley. It is a dry ink with a consistent flow.

Nov 2023 update: I have provided pictures of how the ink has faded over the years.

Overall: This is a great blue-black alternative to Montblanc Midnight Blue. I recommend trying a sample but would recommend using this in pens that you are able to clean regularly.
